Shippensburg Area High School offers a wide variety of art experiences. From traditional drawing and painting courses to sculpture to filmmaking to digital arts, there are art courses for every interest.
Please be sure to check the Course Flow Chart and Course Descriptions before you schedule! Some classes have prerequisites (other courses you must have taken) and others are open only to certain grade-level students. Some courses are 1 marking period in length, some a semester in length, and some meet all year. Some courses are .50 credit and some are a full credit courses. All courses are appropriate to satisfy the Humanities graduation requirement.

Design is a foundation course recommended for anyone with an interest in art. Students will develop their understanding of visual communication through study of the elements and Principles of Design in a variety of activities including printmaking, computer graphic design, and three-dimensional design. This class is a prerequisite for Advanced Design, Ceramics and 3-D Design.
ART110 Drawing (9-12) .50 credit

Drawing is a foundation course recommended for all students interested in art. Students will investigate a variety of drawing techniques and materials using both observation and imagination. Art production in combination with the studies of elements and Principles of Design, art history and aesthetics will broaden a sense of context.
Prerequisite for Painting, Ceramics and 3-D Design.
ART200 Painting 1 (9-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Drawing
Students are introduced to painting media including watercolor and acrylic. Skills from basic drawing are used to improve observational skills to create landscape, portraiture and still life compositions. Students learn about brush stroke,color mixing and the differences between painting media. The historical and cultural aspects of painting are also explored.
ART210 Advanced Design (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Design
Advanced Design builds upon the concepts from Design, providing opportunities for creative problem solving while exploring a broad range of materials and techniques. Students will develop a personal Design identity, delving into printmaking techniques digital photography graphic design. This course is a prerequisite for Digital Graphic Design.
ART215 Three-Dimensional Design (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Drawing or Design
Three-dimensional Design students investigate both the expressive nature of the sculptor and the logistical concerns of the engineer through the creation of 3-1) objects. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between space and object, while considering the role each plays in shaping the other. Students will work in a variety of materials such as wood, paper and clay.
ART220 Media Arts .50 credit
No prerequisite
Art is ever evolving. In the 21st Century, art and technological tools are more and more entwined. This class provides opportunities for visual problem solving combining digital media and traditional artistic tools. Students will design, propose, execute, and assess their own digitally based art projects.
ART225 Ceramics 1 (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Drawing or Design
Ceramics deals with the properties of clay as an artistic medium. Students explore the design and creation of functional and non-functional objects using, hand-building and wheel throwing techniques. The firing process, finishing techniques and historical and cultural aspects of ceramics are covered. This course is a prerequisite for Ceramics Il.
ART230 Ceramics II (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Ceramics I
Ceramics Il provides students with the opportunity to refine methods of clay construction, building on their experience from Ceramics I while developing a personal style and focus. The course will further explore glazing and firing techniques and students will apply research into specific ceramics traditions as they develop their skills.
ART300 Digital Graphic Design (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Advanced Design
In this advanced course, students will gain experience in creating complex. self-directed graphic design projects through the synthesis of digital photography, illustration, page layout design, and typography. The Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) will be taught and used throughout the course. Students are expected to have had previous experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
ART310 Advanced Drawing and Painting (10-12) .50 credit
Prerequisite: Painting I
Advanced Drawing and Painting allows students to use the knowledge gained from Painting I to create work that reflects a personal style. Students are expected to use experimental techniques and construct surfaces on which to draw and paint. Advanced compositional techniques are emphasized.
ART320 Portfolio (11-12) .50 credit
Prerequisites: Drawing and two additional art courses or with the approval of the art faculty.Portfolio allows students who are interested in pursuing a career in the visual arts or related fields to develop a portfolio of artwork that represents their knowledge and understanding of visual art. Work from previous art classes as well as new work created in the class is inventoried and photographed for a digital portfolio that can be used for application to art schools and colleges.
ART900 Advanced Placement Studio Art (12)
The AP Studio An course is for students interested in a rigorous and focused study in art. Students can choose between AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-1) Art and Design, or AP Drawing to develop a quality portfolio that demonstrates a mastery of concept and execution. Students will work towards creating a body of work that demonstrates a sustained investigation, as well as selected works. Upon completing the course, students may choose to submit their completed AP Portfolio to the College Board for credit consideration. This step is optional and subject to a fee payable to the College Board. Outside classwork is expected and students will create and maintain a website and blog throughout the 18-week course.
ART901 Advanced Placement Art History (11-12) 1 Credit
There are no prerequisites; however, it is recommended that students have passed Honors Mastering Composition I with a "B" or better and passed a high school studio art course.
AP Art History explores the nature of art and art making, meanings of art, and the cultural contexts of art. It is structured around an in-depth study of art from around the globe, from the prehistoric to the present. The workload and quality expectations are those of an introductory college level course. Summer reading and assignments are required. Students will engage in research projects, in-class presentations, and in-depth discussion throughout the duration of the course, as well as extensive in and out of class reading and writing. A variety of article-based readings and written responses supplement the textbook. (continued next page)
In addition to other assessments, there is a midterm and a final examination. Though not required, students may elect to take the College Board's AP Art History Examination offered in the spring.
ART250 Creative Connections: Personalized Learning Through Art Making (10-12) 1 credit
Ever wonder where good ideas come from? Do you like to figure things out? Are you a hands-on/minds on learner? This course explores the way we think; the way we create; and the way we communicate about our world through art.
In this personalized educational experience, learners will develop their ability to problem-solve, generate innovative ideas, research multiple disciplines, and create original works of art.
Drawing upon research into contemporary artists' awareness of how multiple disciplines impact their work -- and exploring how art spans many different media, techniques, and styles -- learners will be challenged to choose the media that will best articulate their conceptual vision.
With a focus on how we learn; the creative process; studio habits of mind; and artistic behaviors, learners will engage in the development and execution of their ideas. Workshops and instruction will be provided based on the learners' individual interests, supporting each student's journey towards their completed artwork.
In this 18-week course, learners will complete no less than 4 independent projects and one collaborative community-based project.
ENG511 Horror in Literature and Film (11-12) 1 credit (.5 English + .5 Art)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Academic or Honors English 9 with a B or higher.
In this cross-curricular course, students will study horror through literature and film, examining its development from folktale to a recognized genre. Students will study scriptwriting and filmmaking basics, including film production through several hands-on collaborative projects. Students will also study short stories, poems, and novels within the Horror genre beginning with the development of the 18th Century Pre-Romantic Era Gothic novel to today's modem contemporary Horror. Students in this course should be adept in Academic level literacy skills as well as have a sincere willingness to work in many performance tasks with others. Students who successfully complete this semester-long course will receive .5 English elective and .5 Art elective credits.
