You may not know 2007 SASHS alum Eric Brennan, but if you drove through Chambersburg earlier this year, you probably know his work. MORE There is a new mural that decorates the halls of the music wing over at SAIS. Fifth grade students during the 2011-2012 school year worked hard to design and paint the music notes used in the mixed media installation. Shippensburg Area School District Alum, Riley Cameron, donated his time and effort to help paint the music staff on the walls. The finished mural is lyric from the song "Over the Rainbow" written by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg for the movie "The Wizard of OZ." Congratulations to student Janae _____, who along with six other middle school students from the area, were honored at an awards breakfast which was held on April 25th at the Park Inn , Mechanicsburg. Students were recognized not only for their as young artists, but also as combatants against bullying in their schools. Speakers at the event ranged from Local law enforcement officers, special presenters from the Cumberland Valley High School ITO (It Takes One) club, to government officials, including Keynote speaker Governor Tom Corbett. Janae's poster was one of two chosen by Lamar Advertising to be enlarged and placed on billboards in Cumberland County Area (see map below) We are proud of Janae, for her willingness to take a stand against bullying in our school, and her ability to do it so artfully. Hundreds of visitors including students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members attended this year's Artrageous celebration on May 7 from 5-7pm at the high school. Younger visitors enjoyed hands-on activities hosted by members of the high school's National Art Honor Society chapter. All enjoyed the music of buskers, process demonstrations, and (of course) the art. Throughout the halls, lobbies, and art rooms, excellent work from all around the district was on display, including several exhibitions by Advanced Placement Studio Art students. AP Studio Art is an advanced level class that culminates in an optional portfolio review by Educational Testing Services, the same company that administers the S.A.T. A mark of 3,4, or 5 on the portfolio qualifies for college credit and an exemption from some classes at selected colleges and universities. Several artists were honored with awards including several SHAPE awards, the Tom Colley Award, and the Super Award. Award winning artists will be notified by their art teachers. The award winning artworks are on display in the high school lobby until May 23. Artwork by Emily Coon, Class of 2011 |
