changes:
a media arts assignment

Change. It's inevitable.
Everything will change, whether we like it or not. We can delay change, but we can't stop it. This group video project is centered around the idea of change and what it means to you. For your individual assignment, you will create a one minute video clip that is centered that illustrates change in some way.
Picture
All of the clips created by group members will be edited together to make one group video. The song "Changes" by David Bowie will be used as the unifying element for the video.
What are you allowed to do for your individual project? That's up to you. It could be a video collage of photos that show change happening. It could be a time lapse video of changes. It could be a claymation or other stop motion animation that illustrates change. It could be a live-action video or a video of a flip-book animation. You MAY NOT include sound OF ANY KIND in your individual video. All sound will be added in post-production (when it is assembled into the group video). Otherwise, it's up to you.

Some important ideas for your individual projects:
  • GARBAGE IN = GARBAGE OUT Make sure that your individual video is of good quality. It should stand well all on it's own. If it does, your group video will be so much better, and so will your individual grade.
  • LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING: lots of light usually means good photos and video.
  • TELL THE STORY VISUALLY: your story should work well to tell the "story" of change without words, labels, or sound. If it works as a silent film, it will work with sound added later.
  • THINK LIKE AN ARTIST: Your ideas are allowed to be weird and interesting. Don't try to create exactly what everyone expects. That's boring.
  • COLLABORATE AND ASSIST: All of you must complete your own individual video, but that doesn't mean that you can't get help with yours and help others to complete theirs.
When the time comes to bring them together as a group video, each person in your group will have a specific job on the team. From directing to editing, shooting additional video, recording sound effects and more... everyone will have a post-production job.

Grading:
  • Your individual project: 100 points (as Project 4)
  • Group video: Final Exam (group grade +/- observed participation)= 10% of course grade
