Tip 8: Celebrate Differences
Beginning artists are often put off when their works don't look like those of their classmates or their teachers, or when the results aren't photorealistic.
As an artist, one has to get past this tendency. As long as one demonstrates accuracy of pose and gesture, and an understanding of light and dark, the differences from artist to artist are what make every drawing uniquely wonderful.
As to photorealism, that is certainly a great triumph of technique and there is certainly a place for it, but most of the time if we want a photograph, we're better off just taking one.
