Welcome to the SASD Foundation's Summer Art Explorations camps!
Each summer, we are delighted to offer week-long visual and performing arts experiences. Administered by PA Certified Arts Educators, the camps are a great value- similar camps in the area have much higher tuition! Additionally, funds generated from the camps stay in our district to provide for The Greyhound Foundation’s goals for the Arts, supporting local implementation of innovative programs that enrich our youth.
Our Summer Arts Experiences are open to 3rd through 8th grade students and held in the art wing of Shippensburg Area Senior High School, camps run from Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., in early June and feature a one-hour lunch and outdoor play time as well as lots of exciting art-making.
Tuition is $150 with all supplies provided. Each class is limited to just 16 students, so sign up soon to secure your spot! Registration opens March 15 and closes on May 10.
SUMMER 2019 OFFERINGS!
Book Arts
Ever wonder how a book is made? We will delve into an age-old art form, learning bookbinding techniques as we design unique expressions of creativity! We will letter the text, decorate the pages, and construct a variety of book styles, from traditional paper signatures to 3-D pop-ups. With an assortment of media, participants will communicate ideas through design, content, words, and images.
Fiber Arts
In this hands-on exploration, we will engage in traditional and contemporary fiber arts. Drawing upon an exciting variety of materials and techniques, we will create both functional and decorative artworks. Projects will include weaving, needle felting, fabric coil basketry, batik, macramé, and a unique, hand-sewn stuffed character. It will be a fun-filled adventure, sure to satisfy busy hands and creative minds.
Fool Me Twice: Photo Illusions
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice and you must be making some cool photo illusions! In this all new art and tech camp, campers will use tablets, smart phones, and other photographic technology along with tried-and-true trick photographic techniques to create amazing illusions. Along our journey, campers will develop skills with basic photo techniques and equipment, discover a few Photoshop tricks, learn about the history of trick photography, hear and tell some cool stories, and make lots of great take-home art.
POW! The Amazing World of Pop Art
Pop Artists of the 1950’s and ‘60’s changed the way we view art forever and made the world of fine art more accessible for everyone. Campers will explore works of Pop Art masters Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein as well as comics, children's books, anime and more to find pop culture inspiration for this hands on camp. Pop Art camp participants will experiment in pencil, colored pencil, paint, marker and more!
Surface Treatment Exploration
Combine colorful acrylic paint with glue, soap, pastes, pumice, papers, stencils, gauze and…. WOW! These are just a few materials and methods to introduce the ideas of depth, texture & composition into your artistic arsenal. Students can experiment, play and share their discoveries in this camp that is all about enjoying the activity of making art. People will wonder, “how you did that” instead of immediately recognizing the mysterious result. Campers will work with a variety of additive, subtractive & resist techniques that will emphasize painting freely, being happy in the process and turning this guided play into completed works of art that are amazingly exciting to look at (and in some cases, touch).
