Hopefully you are in a position where you can take time to appreciate the wonders of this changing season: the color change of the foliage, the crisp air, the smell of leaves. It's especially a wonder in the Shippensburg area where we are surrounded by mountains and forests. It's a great time and a great place to make a little art.
OK, I tricked you there. You didn't know where I was going and I lured you into something scary. Well, fear not.
You don't have to be a trained artist to make beautiful things. Anyone can press a beautiful leaf, and later glue it to a paper and frame it. Anyone can find an interesting deadfall branch and strip off the twigs and bark to make a walking stick. Find a unwanted mirror or picture frame and repaint it with spraypaint in Autumn reds, oranges, plums, or browns. Get back into drawing with a quick sketch of a pumpkin, gourd, or drying sunflower. Is all of that really art? Maybe, and maybe not. But it is certainly artistic and it is miles closer to art than sitting on your couch watching Netflix is.
It's going to get snowy soon. You've got opportunities RIGHT NOW. Do something.
The real point is, making art is about the doing. And getting better at it is about doing it a lot. And doing it a lot starts with doing it once.
